WHAT IS WELLNESS?

“Wellness” is a fairly new buzz word, while the word “health” has been used for centuries. Wellness can be described as the degree to which an individual experiences health and vitality in any dimension of life… physical, bio-chemical and psychological.” The word “degree” implies that wellness and illness exists on a continuum. The human body is never static. Every decision you make moves you toward wellness or away from it. The question is which way are you moving?

“Health” refers to biological function… blood pressure, heart rate, body fat, etc. “Wellness” is a more expansive concept. So when we talk about wellness, we are talking about how you experience your entire life, not just a number on the scale or the size of your clothes. If wellness and illness exist on a continuum and you are never standing still, then the decisions you make today will determine the direction you are moving on that continuum. If you choose to go to the gym today, you will be moving a little closer toward wellness on the continuum. If, on the other hand, you decide that you “deserve a break today” and eat a bag full of fast food, you are then moving a little further away from wellness. Wellness University is designed to educate, motivate and facilitate healthy lifestyle choices which will lead you to health and wellness. Which way would you rather move? It’s your choice.

CORPORATE WELLNESS

Corporate Wellness is among the most vital investments that a company can make. Businesses that start Corporate Wellness programs aren’t only investing in the physical wellness, safety, and mental health of their employees, but are also taking preventive measures by creating a healthier environment.

By starting a Corporate Wellness program, corporations are able to improve the overall productivity and are able to save money on health care expenses. Happy-healthy employees’ miss less work days, are more productive during work hours, and cost companies less money in the long run. The sad part is that most individuals and companies don’t understand what wellness truly is. They implement a “Health Fair” and some do regular health screening inside the office. The problem; most “Health Fairs,” consist of booths occupied by insurance companies, massage therapists, health professionals including chiropractors, and maybe a booth to check blood sugar and blood pressure. People walk by, grab a free sample, 10 min massage, and some brochures and are on their way back to work. Are they any healthier? Have they learned one thing that will help them gain health in the future from this process? If your test results showed high blood pressure, do they explain possible reasons as well as possible solutions; including what types of foods, exercise, and other lifestyle choices that can naturally lower these levels? Typically the answer is no.

So how do we make good decisions that will lead us to optimum wellness? Quality education is the key. The information that you learn should give you the tools to achieve your goals, motivate you to make a positive change, and inspire you to follow through to facilitate those changes.

Includes 12 one hour monthly seminars, topics are listed below. Each seminar has individual handouts and a monthly challenge from that month’s topic. These challenges are great motivators that the whole office can enjoy, great for team building, and even better to build health and wellness.
