According to the American Chiropractic Association, Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, and pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches. The chiropractic approach to health care is holistic, stressing the patient's overall health and wellness. It recognizes that many factors affect health, including exercise, diet, rest, environment, and heredity. Chiropractors provide natural, drugless, non-surgical health treatments and rely on the body's inherent recuperative abilities. They also recommend changes in lifestyle including eating, exercise, and sleeping habits to patients. When appropriate, chiropractors consult with and refer patients to other health practitioners. Like other health practitioners, chiropractors follow a standard routine to secure the information they need for diagnosis and treatment. They take the patient's medical history; conduct physical, neurological, and orthopedic examinations; and may order laboratory tests. X rays and other diagnostic images are important tools because of the chiropractor's emphasis on the spine and its proper function. Chiropractors also employ a postural and spinal analysis common to chiropractic diagnosis. In cases in which difficulties can be traced to the involvement of musculoskeletal structures, chiropractors manually adjust the spinal column. These adjustments have been proven to increase motion, increase circulation, reduce swelling and pain, and remove nervous irritation. Once this nervous irritation is removed, your body is able to do what it is designed to do - heal itself. Chiropractors can also use modalities such as cold laser, massage, ultrasound, interferential, acupuncture, and heat/cryo-therapy. They also may apply supports such as straps, tapes, and braces. In addition, to help avoid future occurrences, chiropractic care usually includes advice on how to take care of yourself including tips on sitting, standing, bending and lifting that show you how simple activities of daily life impact your spine.
